Our training ‘system’ is a proven, structured and extremely successful method that develops the dog into all he or she can be. The Shed outlines our method for instructing this phase of work in explicit detail, from our dog’s first exposure to the 2 stages of intermediate shedding, and ultimately, the Open level. In this course, Alasdair and I train 9 dogs at different stages. Additionally, Alasdair comprehensively discusses judging and actually critiques and judges a series of sheds with analysis and point deduction.

The course is designed to instruct a dog from start to finish at the shed; it allows keen hands at any level to learn best practices, and established trainers will find many aspects of our approach to integrate into their own system for increased success. All handlers judging or aspiring to judge can learn from Alasdair’s principals and standards for the shed.

The Shed is a comprehensive tool and a much more complete offering than the DVD ‘A Shedding Clinic with Alasdair’. This course will be available on-line only and is not offered as a DVD.

MacRae Way: The Outrun

The Outrun outlines our method for instructing this phase of work which emphasizes balance point and NOT on pushing our dogs off of the sheep. In this course, Alasdair and I train 5 dogs and detail how to encourage development of the outrun for the more natural dog while providing tools for dogs that need training to achieve an outrun. We contrast both types of dogs in the arena with Nell and Rhys, and compare Joe to Hank in the field. We outline how our ‘training system’ is apparent from our dog’s first exposure to sheep and connect Starting Young Dogs to The Outrun. This module concludes with how and when to introduce a spotter in preparation for a young dog’s first sheepdog trial.

We believe dogs should be committed to going to balance point and outrunning before driving in earnest, and sequentially, The Outrun module follows Starting Young Dogs. Starting Young Dogs is our flagship offering and details our systematic training method with an emphasis on balance point.

Because our foundation training makes complex training intuitive for the dogs, we reference our training system in The Outrun and future courses; however, all courses are valuable independent of one another.

The Outrun module provides effective tools for the novice and intermediate handler in addition to instruction expressly intended for the expert handler looking to widen an outrun and establish a foundation that encourages blind turn backs and enables ‘bends’ on the fly.

I have been implementing the MacRae on line series to train my two young pups beginning with the “Starting a Young Dog” and now have moved on to the “Outrun Series”. I love that the MacRae method of training does not include harsh or negative corrections but rather shaping the dog by rewarding with the sheep and praise for a job well done or not. Great project and right on target! This first installment is brimming with down-to-earth guidance. Watching it was a great reminder of the importance of considering each young dog individually.
